Antidiabetic and Antihyperlipidemic Effects of Calamus rotang L leaves (Arecaceae) in Streptozotocin-Nicotinamide Induced Diabetic Model

Background: Calamus rotang L (Asteraceae), also known as Pirampu in India, has long been employed Ayurvedic medicinal formulations. It used to cure diabetes folklore medicine for centuries. Aim: This Study evaluated the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of leaves streptozotocin-nicotinamide (STZ-NC) induced diabetic model. Methods: Estimation fasting blood glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, total lipid profiles, lipoproteins, hepatic marker enzyme activity, pancreas histopathology was performed STZ-NC rats after receiving ethanol extract C. (100 & 200 mg/kg) 28 days orally. The data were statistically analysed using one-way analysis (ANOVA) post hoc multiple comparison tests. Results: given at doses 100 mg/kg showed a substantial drop glucose levels an increase body weight. HbA1C, TC, TG, LDL, VLDL, AST, ALT, ALP dramatically lowered by L, whereas Hb, HDL cholesterol significantly increased. Furthermore, diabetes, positive impact on histological alterations. Conclusions: For first time, these findings show that significant potential, bolstering plant's claimed application treatment its complications.
